]]>The figures illustrate a telling relationship between health literacy levels and accurate self-assessment. 39% of all patients in the study believed that they were managing their diabetes well. But of those at 7th- or 8th-grade health literacy level, 59% believed their condition to be well-managed, and of those at 6th-grade level or below, the figure rose to 61%.
This is just one of many recent studies highlighting the link between better health literacy and better health. More literate patients are more adherent to pharmacy directions, more alert to warning signs, and more likely to attend check-ups and screenings.

]]>The University of Colorado study gave tablet computers to 50 computer-literate inpatients and let them access their own records.
82% of the subjects felt that this access improved their understanding of their medical condition, and 60% felt it helped them to better understand their doctors’ instructions.
Also encouraging was the fact that the patients’ access to records did not increase the workload of their doctors and nurses, as was originally feared.
